What is Veeam Cloud Connect?

Watch how fast, secure cloud backup is made easy

Veeam Cloud Connect is new technology that was released as part of the Veeam Availability Suite and Veeam Backup & Replication.

Veeam Cloud Connect provides a much easier way to backup your virtual servers and data to the Virtual IT Managed Services Cloud and it has been designed and built by Veeam for service providers, like Virtual IT Managed Services, and it;

  • eliminates the need for dedicated VPNs
  • enables end-to-end encryption for backups
  • is fully integrated into the Veeam Backup & Replication console

Veeam Cloud Connect makes it easy to backup data to the cloud, while increasing security and reliability with an automated offsite backup.

Using Veeam Cloud Connect helps eliminate upfront capital expenditures for equipment and reduces offsite data centre costs including space, power, networking and equipment.

What makes Veeam offsite backup easy and secure?

In case of disaster, you can restore entire VMs, VM files, VM hard disks and VM guest OS files from the cloud in several clicks.

With Veeam Cloud Connect, there is no need to build and maintain a second site; simply select us as your service provider and send your backups to our pay-as-you-go hosted backup repository. You can get your backups offsite quickly and securely through Veeam Cloud Connect for:

  • Hosted offsite backups: Get your backups offsite to a hosted cloud repository through a reliable, secure SSL connection and cloud gateway, with no additional Veeam licensing required.
  • Complete visibility and control: Access and recover data in the hosted backup repository directly from the backup console. Track cloud repository consumption and receive reminders for hosted storage renewals.
  • A modern backup architecture: Fully leverage Veeam’s modern backup technology, including Backup Copy Job with Built-in WAN Acceleration, forever incremental backups, GFS (grandfather-father-son) retention policies and more, ALL built into one product.
  • End-to-end encryption: Rest easy by encrypting all data at the source (before it leaves your network perimeter), in flight and at rest, without negatively impacting the data-reduction ratios of built-in compression, deduplication and WAN Acceleration.

Use a backup job to store data on-premises for fast local restores, then use a backup copy job to send data off site to our cloud repository for risk mitigation

Mastering the “3-2-1 rule”

The “3-2-1 rule” states that you need to keep three copies of your data, on two types of storage, with one copy being off site. Getting backups off site can be challenging due to limited bandwidth, exploding data volumes and a lack of resources required to build or maintain a true offsite backup repository.

With Veeam Cloud Connect, you can master the “3-2-1 rule” without dumping money and resources into a second site or adding bandwidth – just leverage our cloud backup repository services and take advantage of Veeam’s Built-in WAN Acceleration technology and so much more.

How your setup will work

What may surprise you is just how simply Veeam Cloud Connect works, “It Just Works”, but you will need to ensure that you have upgraded to, or freshly acquired Veeam Backup & Replication Version 9.x

If you don’t have version 9.x, or don’t have Veeam at all, don’t panic, Virtual IT Managed Services can assist you with your upgrades and provide you with either perpetual licenses, or monthly rental of Veeam on a per VM basis. Please visit the licensing tab above to find out more.

The screen shots below are from a beta version of Veeam Cloud Connect and will be updated with general release screens once available.

Naturally, the first thing you will need to do is “add a service provider” to your Veeam Backup Infrastructure.

Once the service provider has been added, you will need to set the host name (which is the Cloud Connect Gateway DNS name) and the management IP port.

Host Name:

Port: 6180

This will be the username and password assigned to you by Virtual IT Managed Services. The password can always be changed through our web service portal. You may wish to verify our security certificate to confirm authenticity of our platforms.

Now that you have set the connectivity to the Virtual IT Managed Services Veeam Cloud Connect Gateway, will will need to configure a “cloud repository” which is just like any other repository, you can write backup and backup copy jobs to it, perform restores from it, report on usage etc.

If you want your backups to be encrypted in the Virtual IT Managed Services cloud repository, simply enable encryption in the backup or backup copy job. This feature has been available since version 8.

That’s it, your new Cloud Backup Repository with Virtual IT Managed Services is ready to go, create or modify your backup or backup copy jobs to begin utilizing the repository like you would any other !!!

Veeam Backup & Replication Licensing

BYO licenses

If you already have Veeam Backup & Replication version 9.x, then implementing an off-site Cloud Connect solution with Virtual IT Managed Services is very straight forward. We can provide you with a quote, or if you’re not sure how things will work and you just want to give it a try first, perhaps a FREE 30 day trial may be a good place to start, either way, we will ensure that whatever solution is deployed for you will be exactly the solution that they need.

If you need some more information or have some specific requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your exact needs.

Monthly Rental with Virtual IT Managed Services

Perhaps you currently don’t have Veeam Backup & Replication, or you have a older version without maintenance? Virtual IT Managed Services works with many customers across Australia for whom we provide monthly rental of Veeam Backup & Replication which is supplied on a “per VM” basis. In nearly all cases, monthly rental of Veeam can work out comparable or less costly than purchasing outright.

As with most cloud services, one of the big attractions is the ability to turn large, regular captial expediture (CAPEX) items (such as purchasing software) into an easy to consume monthly operational expense (OPEX) with the costs increasing, or decreasing, depending on your specific workloads and number of VMs that are protected.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to explore a monthly rental option for Veeam.

Licensing for Veeam Cloud Connect

Virtual IT Managed Services provide and include the Veeam Cloud Connect licenses which are based on a ‘per VM’ charge for those VMs which you backup to the Virtual IT Managed Services cloud with Veeam Cloud Connect.

Does my organization need Managed Backup Services?

Managed Backup Services is a necessity for those who struggle to cope with service demands. As infrastructure evolves, managing backups can be become increasingly complex and may require around the clock monitoring. If this is beyond your IT capabilities, you definitely need someone to complement your IT department.

A survey conducted by ‘’CA Technologies’’ shows small businesses lost an average of $55,000 in revenue due to IT failures. Medium sized companies lose an average of $91,000 annually, and large companies lose more than $1 million in revenue annually. If your business is losing precious time and money due to IT failures , you should consider signing up for Managed Backup Services.

What are the benefits of having Managed Backup Services?

There are numerous benefits to having Managed Backup Services. First of all, clients reap the benefits of lower operating costs and are easily able to predict costs in periods well over a year. The complexity of delivering IT backup services is reduced as you no longer have to manage the task. This enhances your internal IT efficiency, giving you the opportunity to focus on core business.

Additionally, Managed Backup Services offers monitoring and self managed restores, which grants you in-depth information and quick response time for critical data recovery.

Does the End User need additional Veeam licensing for their side of the cloud connect setup?

No additional licensing from Veeam is required, however, the End User will need Veeam ver. 9.x and a subscription with Virtual IT Managed Services

Why is Veeam using a subscription-based model for new products?

Our customers are consuming public cloud and Software as a Service (SaaS) on a subscription basis as well as per VM or per workload. To align our licensing model with how our customers consume these services, Veeam has introduced a subscription-based model. All new Veeam products are licensed using this model. These new products are components of the Veeam Availability Platform for the Hybrid Cloud.
The benefits of this model for our customers include:

  • Lower cost: Lower initial cost that lets you purchase with OpEx spend
  • Price predictability: Purchase three-year contracts to lock in pricing by paying upfront
  • Pay for use: Buy only what you need today and increase/decrease based on need at the time of renewal
  • No vendor lock: If you’re not satisfied, you may choose not to renew your subscription
  • Latest technology: Get access to the latest product releases without ongoing maintenance fees
  • Time-value of money: Hold onto your money longer with no large upfront expense

Does Veeam have its own hosted offering?

No, Veeam is 100% channel driven. They do not compete with their partners such as Virtual IT Managed Services.  Instead, they are investing in R&D and marketing to make it easier for their partners, such as Virtual IT Managed Services, to offer hosted services for Veeam.

Can I ship you a drive containing backup data to seed the cloud storage?

Yes. You would need to ship a drive containing the appropriate Veeam Backup files (.VBK .VRB. VBM) for us to copy to our cloud repository. If the backup files are encrypted, you will also need to provide the password.

What is the SLA around Cloud Backup?

We do not have a specific SLA yet, however the target is 99.95% availability on the service itself.

Is Encryption supported?

Yes, a user simply needs to enable Encryption for the backups and all the data backed up will be encrypted.  Our team can assist if required to enable this for you.
